Introduction
- Nepal police is the only civil police organization of the country, entrusted with the responsibilities of prevention and investigation of the crime.
- Policing in Nepal goes back to ancient period, though the formal civil police organization was not established prior to 1864.
- During the Rana Regime (1864-1951)the police organization was conceived and gradual progression took place towards modern policing.
- Police Headquarters was established in 1952 in Katmandu and Mr. Toran Shamsher J.B.Rana was appointed its first chief as the Inspector General of Police.
- Nepal Police was formally established when the Police Act, 1956 was promulgated. Subsequently, the Police Regulation, 1959 was promulgated
- Nepal police commenced its participation in the UN Peacekeeping missions from the year 1991.
